My apple crumble is our family favourite. With the sweet apple filling and a crisp golden topping, this is one of those desserts where there is always an empty dish at the end of your evening.
What makes a crumble filling?
For the crumble filling, I like to use a variety of cooking apples and normal shop apples.
The ‘cooking’ apples break down during the baking process and the ‘normal shop’ apples will retain texture giving the perfect apple sauce to the crumble.
Ingredients
Apple Filling
- 3-4 Apples (600g)
- 2 tbsp Caster Sugar (I use Golden)
Crumble Topping
- 190 g Plain Flour
- 120 g Caster Sugar (I use Golden)
- 120 g Butter (chilled from fridge)
Optional Topping
- 2 tbsp Oats
- 2 tbbs Soft Brown Sugar
Instructions
- Pre-heat your oven to 190C or gas 5. Choose a cookware dish you will assemble your crumble in
- Slice your apples into thin strips and place them into a bowl (you can peel the apples if you wish but I enjoy the texture and colour with the skin on)
- With your bowl of sliced apples, add 2 tbsp golden caster sugar and toss until evenly coated. Place into your cookware dish and flatten down with your hand to prevent crumble falling through
- Put plain flour (190g) and golden caster sugar (120g) and small chunks of cold butter (120g) and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture looks like large breadcrumbs
- Pour the crumble mix over the apples and spread evenly. Gently press the surface with the back of a spoon so the crumble holds together and goes crisp
- (optional) Sprinkle rolled oats (2 tbsp) and Soft Brown sugar (2 tbsp) over the top of your crumble mix for added flavour and crisp
- Pop your crumble in a preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, until the top is golden and the apples are soft if you insert a small, sharp knife
You can replace the apples with rhubarb, pears, or blackberries. Feel free to experiment with different fruit flavour combinations!
